Golden Bears impressive weekend has them ready for NEC Championship

NASHVILLE, TN. (March 20, 2011)—The Kutztown University women's bowling team finished seventh out of 20 teams at the Columbia 300 Music City Invitational at Smyrna Bowling Center, in Nashville earlier Sunday afternoon.

The Golden Bears (95-31 overall) were 12-3 over the weekend. The tournament was hosted by Vanderbilt University. KU is ranked seventh in the latest National Tenpin Coaches Association (NTCA) poll. Sunday's format was the best three-of-seven Baker games. KU swept No.13 Adelphi, 4-0 and defeated No.10 Sam Houston State, 4-2. Kutztown fell to No.9 Sacred Heart, 1-4.

“The two wins we got today were great because we did not shoot spares well today at all,” Kutztown University head coach Joseph Ambrose said.

During Saturday's six traditional team games, the Golden Bears were perfect and got wins over Sacred Heart 942-863, No.4 Nebraska 901-862, No.5 Vanderbilt 898-891, Minnesota State-Mankato 963-860, Louisiana Tech 1105-1034, and Sam Houston St. 958-944. During the tournament, Kutztown had a pin fall of 10323.

The three day invitational featured eight of the nation's top 10 programs and 15 of the top 20 in the latest NTCA poll.

“Our record over the weekend puts us in good shape going into the Northeast Conference Championships this coming weekend,” Ambrose said. “We will surely work hard this week to prepare for the NEC Championships.”

With Nashville in its past, KU will focus on the big picture of the Northeast Conference (NEC) Championships. The NEC is home to seven teams are ranked in the top 20 NTCA poll. Kutztown, Fairleigh Dickinson, New Jersey City, Sacred Heart, Adelphi, and St. Francis (NY) have held top-20 status since the NTCA Preseason Poll debuted in October. Saint Peter's became the seventh NEC member to earn a top-20 national ranking this season. FDU is the defending national champion.
