Jones named MVP as Kutztown leads KU Fall Baker Invite/Team Matches

READING, Pa. (October 22, 2011)—The Kutztown University women's bowling team is currently in first place at the KU Fall Baker Invite/Team Matches, after day one of competition at Berks Lanes.

Participating schools in the tournament are Adelphi, Hampton, Cheyney, St. Peter's, Howard, Lincoln, Penn State University-Altoona, Salem International, Long Island, Coppin State, Tulane, St. Francis – Pa, Pittsburgh-Greensburg, and Medaille.

KU went 5-0 on the day and leads with a total pin fall of 4553. Adelphi is in second (4427), followed by St. Peter's (4404) and LIU (4354). St. Francis-Pa rounds out the top five with 4353 pins.

The format for Saturday's tournament was five, 4-game baker matches, followed by one 4-game baker position round match.

KU's Kayla Jones (Johnstown, PA/Westmont Hilltop ) took home the baker frame average MVP award. Jones led with a baker frame average of 21.5. Golden Bears Brooke Bower (Camp Hill, PA/Cedar Cliff) and Samantha Santoro (Reinholds, PA/Cocalico ) also received awards. Bower had 20.5 baker frame average and Santoro finished with a 19.29 average.

Other bowlers that received awards following Saturday's baker competition were LIU's Brittany Hart (19.3), St. Francis-Pa's Christina Leid (19.25), Adelphi's Danielle Merino (19.2), and Amanda Borger (18.9) of St. Peter's.

In addition to 14 teams participating, Kutztown got a chance to compete against four Northeast Conference (NEC) mates.

“We had a tough match but bounced right back and really came together as a team to pull it out in the end,” Kutztown University bowling coach Joseph Ambrose said. “All the NEC teams did well and we will have tough matches against them tomorrow. It's always great to win any event and I'm proud of our team.”

Sunday's schedule of events includes five team matches beginning at 9 a.m. with an awards ceremony starting at 2:15 p.m. The top four teams will receive awards which is based on total pin fall.
