Six Wrestlers from No. 17 Kutztown continue climb to the top step at 2025 NCAA DII Wrestling Championships

KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The 17th-ranked Kutztown University wrestling team is set to send a program-record six grapplers to the 2025 NCAA Division II Wrestling Championships in Indianapolis on Friday, Mar. 14 and Saturday, Mar. 15, where the Golden Bears will look to wrap up their season on top of their respective weight classes when they take the mats inside Corteva Coliseum.

Friday's opening session takes place at 10 a.m., which includes the preliminaries and first-round competition. Session 2 begins at 5 p.m., which features the second-round matches and the opening rounds of consolation. Sessions 3 and 4 start at 10 a.m. and 7 p.m., respectively, on Saturday, as championship semifinals and consolation rounds will open the day, and championship finals will close out the event in the final session. Fans can purchase tickets through the NCAA site at the link above, as they are encouraged to do so in advance to limit long lines at the doors.

The top three wrestlers from every weight class in six super regions will wrestle for individual national championships, with ten champions being crowned at the end of the event. The team with the most combined points earns a team national championship, an honor Central Oklahoma has held for the past two seasons.

The Golden Bears (11-1, 5-1 PSAC) are sending 149-pound Jimmy Ryan (Staten Island, N.Y./Monsignor Farrell), 165-pound Bailey Gimbor (Bernville, Pa./Hamburg), 174-pound Dalton Gimbor (Bernville, Pa./Hamburg), 184-pound Matthew Weinberg (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan), 197-pound Wayne McIntyre (East Stroudsburg, Pa./East Stroudsburg North) and 285-pound Freddie Retter (Quakertown, Pa./Quakertown) after all six claimed top three finishes at the NCAA Super Region I Championships on Saturday, Mar. 1.

Ryan, who will look to conclude his career as an All-American after narrowly missing the honor in 2022-23, qualified as the winner of the consolation bracket at Super Regionals, winning by technical fall to advance. The Staten Island, N.Y., native leads the team in regular season major decisions, and will look to wrestle his way to the podium this upcoming weekend.

Reigning 157-pound All-American Bailey Gimbor (Bernville, Pa./Hamburg) will seek similar success in the 165-pound weight class, as the regional champion's only losses came to top-10 wrestlers in 2024-25. The Bernville, Pa., native is currently riding a 13-match winning streak and hopes to stretch that wave through the finish line and to the top of the podium.

Dalton Gimbor (Bernville, Pa./Hamburg) qualified for the national stage with a pair of pins at Super Regionals, and his 15-5 regular season record includes five pins and five technical falls. Only time will tell if the redshirt junior's move to the 174-pound weight class was the right decision as he looks to join his brother as an All-American for the Golden Bears.

Weinberg cleaned up all four of his bouts in under 10 total minutes at Super Regionals, with a pair of pins opening his day and a pair of technical fall victories locking him into a national qualifying spot. His end goal, however, is to return to the National Championship final in Indianapolis, where he will look to cap off an illustrious career in the Maroon and Gold by becoming the sixth national champion in program history.

McIntyre reached the finals of the 197-pound weight class before dropping a 9-2 decision to sixth-ranked Dakoda Rodgers of Pitt-Johnstown, but his three dominant victories in the opening rounds paired with his 17-3 record on the regular season shows that he is ready to build on his postseason success after picking up a first-round win on the national stage a season ago.

Retter had a tall task of claiming the lone available spot in the consolation finals after losing to sixth-ranked Dorian Grosby of Gannon, and he took care of business by earning a major decision in the semis and pinning Millersville's Bishop McCoy in under a minute to claim the team's sixth ticket to Indy.

The National Wrestling Coaches Association released their latest rankings following Super Regional competition, and Kutztown was elevated three spots to No. 17 from their 20th ranking to begin 2025. All three ranked wrestlers are in the heavier half of the weight classes, as 11th-ranked Bailey Gimbor (Bernville, Pa./Hamburg) and ninth-ranked Dalton Gimbor (Bernville, Pa./Hamburg) moved up a spot, while Weinberg stayed pat at No. 2 behind reigning national champion Ty McGeary, who is seeking a repeat performance against the Kutztown grappler on the national stage.

Last season, the Gimbor brothers, McIntyre and Weinberg were the four representatives from KU at nationals. Bailey Gimbor (Bernville, Pa./Hamburg) placed eighth for his first All-American honor, while Weinberg claimed his second consecutive honor after finishing second at 184 pounds.
