CHEYNEY, Pa. – The Kutztown University women's volleyball team began play in its final weekend of the season by sweeping Cheyney (25-19, 25-13, 25-8) on Friday night at Alfred Cope Hall.
Trailing 10-4 in the first set, KU stormed back with a 15-4 run to erase the initial deficit and take the early lead. The next two sets went more smoothly as the Golden Bears scored nine of the first 12 points in the second before pulling away with 11 of the opening 14 points in the third.
Brittney Moyer (Orwigsburg, Pa./Blue Mountain (Lock Haven)) was the only player to reach the double-digit kill mark, finishing with 10 to move into seventh place in the program's single-season annals with 386 for the year. It was her 22nd match this season with 10+ kills and she added 10 digs for her 17th double-double.
Also with a double-double – her seventh of the year – was
Anna Conti (Grove City, Ohio/Grove City), who tallied match-highs of 25 assists and 12 digs, the latter of which was tied for her most in a three-set match this season.
Madison Brake (Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Bishop Hartley) was one dig behind Conti as she moved into 10th place in program history with 427 digs in a single-season.
Tori Wakelee (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown East) gave Kutztown four student-athletes in double-figures for digs as she finished with 10 to go along with eight kills, which was a season-high for a three-set match.
Zandria Zielinski (York, Pa./York Catholic) led KU with three total blocks and added four kills.
Taylor Brown (Dillsburg, Pa./Northern) and
Niki Carpenter (King of Prussia, Pa./Upper Merion Area) had three kills each.
Sophie Kerschner (Clinton, N.J./North Hunterdon) recorded a new career-best with four service aces as Kutztown's eight service aces matched a season-high for a three-set match. The Golden Bears also held Cheyney to -.076 hitting.
KU concludes its season tomorrow, Nov. 12, at West Chester at 1 p.m.
