Kutztown's Janet Malouf Takes Cold Water Challenge for Kay Yow Fund

Video of Coach Malouf #Chillin4Charity

KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Kutztown University women's basketball head coach Janet Malouf was doused with buckets of cold water by members of the KU athletics staff on Monday afternoon in support of the national effort known as Chillin4Charity in benefit of the Kay Yow Cancer Fund.

Malouf was challenged by West Chester University head coach Deirdre Kane, who pledged to donate $25 to the fund if Malouf accepted the challenge. Moments before taking the 'Cold Water Challenge', Malouf challenged California (PA) head coach Jess Strom, Lock Haven head coach Jennifer Smith, and the commissioner of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Steve Murray. If they accept the challenge by the Fourth of July, Malouf will donate $25 in each challenger's name.

The Chillin4Charity challenge has taken over social media in the last two weeks, especially with women's basketball programs across the country. It began at the University of Arizona, where head coach Niya Butts initiated the challenge to several other coaches in the PAC-12. The challenge went viral and moved from the PAC-12 to women's basketball programs across the country.

The Kay Yow Cancer Fund was officially founded on December 3, 2007, from the vision of the organization's namesake Kay Yow, former North Carolina State University head women's basketball coach. Yow was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 1987, and passed away on January 24, 2009, after facing her third bout with the disease. Before her death, she joined forces with the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) and The V Foundation for Cancer Research to form the Kay Yow Cancer Fund, a charitable organization committed to being a part of finding an answer in the fight against women's cancers.

Kutztown, along with most women's basketball programs across the country, dedicate at least one game per season as a "Play4Kay" game to help raise money and awareness for breast cancer research.
